How Much Mulch Do I Need? Depth and Cubic Yard Guide
Measure landscape bed area, choose an appropriate mulch depth, and convert cubic feet into bulk cubic yards or bags.
Short answer
Multiply the bed area in square feet by mulch depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. To buy bags, divide cubic feet by the volume shown on each bag and round up.
Use the Mulch CalculatorThe formula
- Cubic feet = bed area in sq ft x (mulch depth in inches / 12)
- Bulk cubic yards = cubic feet / 27
- Bags to buy = cubic feet / cubic feet per bag, rounded up
Worked example
A 240 sq ft bed receiving 3 inches of mulch
- Convert depth: 3 / 12 = 0.25 ft.
- Find volume: 240 x 0.25 = 60 cubic ft.
- Bulk quantity: 60 / 27 = 2.22 cubic yd.
- For 2 cubic ft bags: 60 / 2 = 30 bags.
Order about 2.2 cubic yards in bulk or 30 two-cubic-foot bags, before delivery or rounding policies.
Measure curved beds with simple shapes
Most landscape beds can be sketched as rectangles, triangles, or circles and added together. For an approximate curved border, divide it into short rectangles and avoid measuring only the longest width across an irregular bed.
If you are refreshing an existing mulch layer, measure the depth needed to restore the target level rather than automatically applying a full new layer.
Depth depends on the material and planting
Utah State University Extension advises that mulch thickness varies by material: roughly 1 to 2 inches for fine, dense material and 3 to 6 inches for coarse, fluffy material. Its guidance also states that a 1-inch layer requires approximately 3 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet.
Keep mulch from piling against plant stems, trunks, siding, or openings. Confirm appropriate materials and depth for your plants, climate, fire-safety needs, and property conditions.
- Choose depth before calculating quantity.
- Compare bulk delivery cost with the number of bags required.
- Allow for existing mulch and avoid excessive buildup over time.
Bulk versus bags
Bulk mulch may be economical for larger beds but requires a delivery location and movement across the yard. Bags can be cleaner and easier for small areas or top-ups. The quantity calculation is the same volume expressed in different purchase units.
