How to Calculate Deck Boards and Fasteners for a Simple Deck
Estimate straight deck-board runs, board gaps, waste, and approximate fasteners before checking the selected product system.
Short answer
For straight decking runs, divide deck width by board face width plus the required gap to estimate rows. Multiply by boards per row, add waste, and estimate fasteners at joist intersections. Product instructions and structural design still control the project.
Use the Deck Board CalculatorThe formula
- Board rows = deck width in inches / (board face width + board gap), rounded up
- Boards before waste = rows x (deck length / stock board length, rounded up)
- Boards to buy = boards before waste x (1 + waste percentage), rounded up
- Fasteners = rows x joist intersections x 2 x (1 + waste percentage), rounded up
Worked example
A 16 ft by 12 ft deck surface using 16 ft boards
- Deck width: 12 ft x 12 = 144 in.
- At 5.5 in boards plus a 0.25 in gap: 144 / 5.75 = 25.04, rounded up to 26 rows.
- Each straight row uses one 16 ft board; add 10% waste: 26 x 1.10 = 28.6, rounded up to 29 boards.
- With joists at 16 in on center: 13 intersections per row; 26 x 13 x 2 x 1.10 = 743.6 fasteners.
Estimate 29 surface boards and 744 fasteners for this simple layout before checking the decking system.
Choose the board direction and layout
A straight full-board run is the simplest estimate: board length follows one deck dimension and rows cover the other. Picture frames, breaker boards, angled patterns, stairs, fascia, skirting, or railings require separate material planning.
Stock length matters. When the run is longer than one board, each row needs multiple boards and the joint layout can add waste or additional framing requirements.
Use the manufacturer's required gap
Deck-board gaps allow drainage and accommodate material behavior. Trex documents product-specific gapping and advises following the installation guide for the product being installed. Other wood, composite, or PVC products may specify different spacing and fastening systems.
The calculator accepts an editable gap so the estimated row count follows the selected product instruction rather than a fixed assumption.
- Confirm face width rather than relying on the nominal board name.
- Follow the selected product instructions for gapping and compatible fasteners.
- Account for special layouts, end joints, borders, stairs, and replacement stock.
A surface-material estimate is not a deck design
This calculation covers surface boards and a simple fastener approximation. It does not calculate ledger connections, beams, footings, posts, joists, blocking, flashing, stairs, guards, load design, permits, or inspections.
Confirm structural design, code and permit requirements, product installation guidance, and site conditions before building or purchasing a full deck package.
